  • You apply to one course and can name a college or make an open application.

Overview

Oxford is a collegiate public university in the city of Oxford, about an hour northwest of London by train. It has no single founding date; teaching was already taking place there by the late eleventh century. Undergraduates belong both to the university, which sets courses and exams, and to one of its colleges, where they live, eat and have much of their small group teaching.

That small group teaching is the part most North American students notice first. Instead of large lecture courses with a set syllabus, you meet a tutor in a tutorial of two or three students and defend the essay or problem set you handed in. Degrees are usually three or four years and focused on one subject or a fixed combination from the first week, so there is no general education year and no declaring a major later.

How to apply for 2027 entry

All undergraduate applications go through UCAS, the UK application service. Oxford is one of the universities with the early deadline: 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time for courses starting in 2027. You can apply to Oxford or Cambridge in the same cycle, not both, and Oxford takes one course choice per UCAS application.

  1. Pick a course and check its page for the admissions test, any written work and subject requirements.
  2. Register for the required test. For the October 2026 sitting, registration opened on 1 June 2026, booking ran from 20 July to 28 September 2026, and the tests took place from 12 to 16 October 2026.
  3. Submit the UCAS application, with your personal statement and school reference, by 15 October 2026.
  4. Send any written work your course asks for by the date on the course page.
  5. Watch for a shortlisting decision, usually sent between mid November and early December.

Inside the UCAS form you can name a college or make an open application, in which case a college is allocated for you. Colleges share applicants during shortlisting and interviews, so your first choice is not the only place that may make you an offer.

Admissions tests changed for 2027

This is the cycle where Oxford changed tests most. Oxford now uses three tests run by UAT-UK: the ESAT (Engineering and Science Admissions Test), the TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission) and the new TARA (Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions). The LNAT is still used for Law and the UCAT for Medicine. Older Oxford tests that students may have read about in guides from a few years ago should not be relied on; check each course page.

As one example, Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) asks for the TARA with all three modules: Critical Thinking, Problem Solving and a Writing Task. October results were scheduled for 16 November 2026. A January 2027 sitting exists only for applicants to the Astrophoria Foundation Year.

Interviews and decisions

Oxford states that interviews for 2027 entry take place online in early to mid December 2026; recent rounds have used Microsoft Teams. Some subjects need a shared virtual whiteboard, and a few ask for a touchscreen and stylus, so check the technology tier for your course well before December. Interview dates cannot be rearranged, and notice can be as short as a week.

An Oxford interview feels more like a short tutorial than a job interview. Tutors give you unfamiliar material and watch how you reason with it. Practising thinking aloud helps more than memorizing answers. Our interview skills deck and critical reading deck are useful warm ups. Decisions are sent through UCAS on 12 January 2027.

Requirements for Canadian and US applicants

Oxford lists the international qualifications it accepts, including US and Canadian ones, on its international qualifications page. Check that page for the AP, SAT or ACT combination or provincial results it expects, and check your course page for subject requirements. Mathematics, for example, asks US applicants for AP Calculus BC at 5 as part of its AP offer. Each course page also gives the IB requirement; for PPE it is 39 points including core points, with 7, 6 and 6 at Higher Level, and the A level offer is AAA.

Students from Canada or the US who need a visa apply for the UK Student visa after accepting an unconditional offer and receiving a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. International tuition and college costs are published on Oxford's course fees page; check them for your course and year rather than relying on older figures.

Preparing with StudyBrix

Our United Kingdom guide explains UCAS, personal statements and how UK degrees differ from North American ones. For the TMUA or the problem solving part of the TARA, steady practice with our quantitative reasoning deck builds speed. Once you are in, the jump in independent work is real; what changes in first year is a good read before you arrive.
