In short

  • A large public university in Scotland's capital, which opened in 1583 under a royal charter granted in 1582.
  • Most Scottish undergraduate degrees take four years, with more breadth in the early years.
  • Apply through UCAS by 13 January 2027; Medicine and Veterinary Medicine close on 15 October 2026.
  • US applicants usually present three standardized tests, such as three APs at 4 or higher.

Overview

The University of Edinburgh opened in 1583, following a royal charter granted in 1582. It spreads across several sites in the city, including the Central Area campus around George Square and the King's Buildings campus to the south, which is home to much of science and engineering, with medicine and veterinary medicine taught at further sites. It is a large, comprehensive university organized into three colleges: Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Medicine and Veterinary Medicine; and Science and Engineering.

The detail that matters most for North American students is the Scottish degree structure. An honours degree usually lasts four years, and the first two years often allow courses outside your main subject. That feels closer to a North American bachelor's than the three-year English model, and it gives some room to adjust your direction.

Applying for 2027 entry

Applications go through UCAS. The main equal consideration deadline for 2027 entry is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time. Medicine (MBChB) and Veterinary Medicine follow the 15 October 2026 deadline, and Medicine also requires the UCAT, which must be sat before you apply.

For most programmes the written application carries the decision, so make the personal statement specific to the subject and show reading or projects beyond your classes. Check your programme page for any extra steps.

Requirements for US applicants

Edinburgh asks US applicants to complete three standardized tests in different subjects, meeting any subject requirements. Its examples of the minimum are:

  • Three AP scores at 4 or higher.
  • An SAT of 1290 or more (650 Reading and Writing, 620 Math) plus two AP scores at 4 or higher.
  • An ACT of 27 plus two AP scores at 4 or higher.

Edinburgh will consider SAT superscores but not ACT superscores, and AP Research does not count. Applicants whose school offers no AP courses may be considered with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.3 in advanced or honours classes, usually together with an ACT of 27 or an SAT of 1290, but that route does not apply to Medicine or Veterinary Medicine. Direct entry Medicine asks for at least three AP scores of 5, including Chemistry and two of Biology, Physics or Math, plus the UCAT. Science and engineering programmes add subject rules; Mathematics, for example, needs AP Calculus at 5.

Canadian applicants have a separate country page on the Edinburgh site; check it for the provincial averages and subjects your programme needs.

Costs, visas and preparation

Tuition for international students is published per programme on the university's fees and funding pages for prospective undergraduates. Students who need a visa apply for the UK Student visa. Our United Kingdom guide explains how Scotland's four-year degrees compare with the rest of the UK.

Edinburgh is a big university in a compact city, and first-year students often say the hardest adjustment is not the content but the independence: fewer assignments, more reading, and exams that count for a large share of the mark. Building a weekly review routine early helps, and our study skills deck and final exam study plan are practical starting points. If you are targeting a science programme, our calculus readiness and chemistry readiness decks are a sensible check on your foundations.
