In short

  • A large public research university in Manchester, formed in its current shape in 2004 from two older institutions.
  • Apply through UCAS by 13 January 2027; Medicine and Dentistry close on 15 October 2026.
  • Manchester maps AP scores to A level grades: for example, AAA equals three APs at 5 with a 3.0 GPA diploma.
  • Canadian requirements are listed by province, such as an 80 per cent average in six Grade 12 U or M courses for Ontario.

Overview

The University of Manchester in its current form dates from 2004, when the Victoria University of Manchester and UMIST joined to create one institution. Its roots go back much further: the university marked its bicentenary in 2024 and describes itself as England's first civic university. The main campus runs along Oxford Road just south of the city centre, which makes it one of the most urban large campuses in England: lecture halls, the student union, museums and housing all sit within a short walk or bus ride of each other.

It is a broad university with humanities, social sciences, science, engineering, medicine and health. For North American students used to big public universities, the scale will feel familiar, while the three-year, single-subject degree structure will not.

How to apply

Apply through UCAS. Manchester's USA page lists the codes to use when sending US test scores (its ACT college code is 7026). You can list up to five choices on one UCAS application. For 2027 entry, the main deadline is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time. Medicine and Dentistry use the earlier 15 October 2026 deadline and require the UCAT, so check those course pages for interview formats and test timing.

You do not need every test result in hand when you apply. Manchester accepts applicants who are on track during senior year, and asks you to list your planned or target scores on the UCAS form. Subject rules vary by course and can change each cycle, so confirm with the admissions team if you are unsure whether a particular AP or college class counts.

What US applicants need

Manchester usually treats three AP tests or college-level classes in separate subjects, plus a high school diploma with at least a 3.0 GPA, as the equivalent of three A levels. Exams should be taken within the two years before you enrol.

For the GCSE-level English and mathematics requirements, an SAT of 1290, an ACT of 27, or a 3.0 GPA diploma with suitable Grade 12 grades can count. Community college credits can be presented the same way, and transfer applicants from four-year institutions need at least a 3.0 GPA, with 3.3 or above preferred.

What Canadian applicants need

Manchester is unusually specific about Canada. It lists provincial diplomas one by one. For Ontario, the OSSD needs an 80 per cent average across six Grade 12 U or M courses, studied in person, with final transcripts sent directly by the school. For Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, it describes the diploma and average that are generally considered, while noting that each academic school makes the final call and some courses ask for more. If you are deciding which Grade 12 courses to take, our article on IB and AP courses for university helps with planning.

Fees, visas and getting ready

International tuition is listed on each course page and on Manchester's fees and funding pages. Students who need a visa apply for the UK Student visa. Our United Kingdom guide explains firm and insurance choices once offers arrive, and our academic English deck is a useful refresher for essay-based courses.
