Overview
UCLA is a large public university on a hilly campus in Westwood, on the west side of Los Angeles. Like other UC campuses, it charges nonresident supplemental tuition to students from outside California, including Canadians. Undergraduates are admitted to a college or school, such as the College of Letters and Science, the Samueli School of Engineering or the School of the Arts and Architecture, and some majors run their own supplemental reviews.
How to apply for fall 2027
UCLA uses the shared UC Application, which opens August 1. For fall 2027 the UC system lists a filing period from October 1 to November 30, 2026. UCLA's own page has shown both November 30 and December 1 in different places, so confirm the exact closing date on the UC Application itself and submit a few days early.
- UCLA offers no early action or early decision.
- First-year applicants are accepted only for the fall term.
- Admission decisions arrive in late March, and the enrolment deposit is due May 1.
Testing and academic review
The University of California does not use SAT or ACT scores in admission, and the UC system has said no change will be made before June 2027, so fall 2027 applicants will not need them. UCLA reviews your courses and grades, the Personal Insight Questions and your activities. Strong results in demanding courses carry the most weight.
Deadlines after admission
UCLA's first-year page sets several summer deadlines that matter for students finishing a Canadian Grade 12:
- Send your final official transcript by July 1.
- Have official AP or IB results sent by July 15.
- Keep your final grades in line with what you reported; UC offers can be reviewed if final marks drop sharply.
Costs and aid
International students at UC campuses are generally ineligible for student loans and eligible for very few scholarships, according to the UC's financial aid eligibility page. Budget for tuition, nonresident supplemental tuition, housing in an expensive city and health insurance. UCLA's cost pages give current figures.
Choosing a major on the UC Application
UCLA reviews applicants by the major or school they select, and some majors are far more competitive than others. Engineering and some arts programs have their own requirements, including supplemental applications or portfolios with earlier dates. If you are undecided, you can apply as undeclared within the College of Letters and Science. Read the major's page before you choose, because changing into some impacted majors after arrival is difficult.
Preparing with StudyBrix
The Personal Insight Questions are short, so clear, specific writing matters. Our academic English bridge deck can help. The StudyBrix United States guide compares UC applications with Common App schools, and our Berkeley profile covers the same UC system from another campus.
