Overview

Yale College is the undergraduate school of Yale University in New Haven, a mid-sized city on the Connecticut coast between New York and Boston. Every undergraduate belongs to one of Yale's residential colleges, each with its own dining hall, courtyard and staff, and that college stays your home base for four years. Students take a broad set of distributional courses before and alongside a major.

How to apply for 2026-27

Yale lets first-year applicants pick one of three platforms: the Common Application, the Coalition Application on Scoir, or the QuestBridge Application. Yale has no preference among them.

  • Single-Choice Early Action: due November 1. Non-binding, but it limits other private early applications.
  • Regular Decision: due January 2.

Testing policy has changed

For a few cycles Yale was "test-flexible", accepting AP or IB results in place of the SAT or ACT. Yale's current testing page says first-year and transfer applicants must include ACT or SAT scores. AP and IB scores are encouraged but no longer replace them. Yale does not prefer one test over the other and accepts superscored results. On the ACT, the English, Mathematics and Reading scores are required, while Science and Writing are optional.

Timing matters: tests taken in October or November are generally considered for Single-Choice Early Action, and January or February results for Regular Decision. You can self-report scores, but admitted students must send matching official reports.

Applicants whose first language is not English and who have not spent two or more years at an English-medium school must also submit TOEFL iBT, IELTS, Cambridge English or Duolingo English Test results. Most English-educated Canadians fall outside that rule; French-language schooling in Quebec or elsewhere may bring you inside it, so check carefully.

Costs and financial aid

Yale awards need-based Yale Scholarship grants rather than merit awards. Its affordability page says aid offers meet 100 percent of demonstrated need, regardless of citizenship or immigration status, without requiring loans. Families with incomes below $100,000 and typical assets often qualify for a zero parent share, though Yale stresses each case is reviewed individually.

Yale says its admission process is need-blind for all applicants, including international students, so a request for aid does not affect the admission decision.

Single-Choice Early Action in practice

Yale's early plan stops you applying early to other private US universities, with some exceptions Yale lists on its site. Public universities and Canadian universities are a different matter, so many Canadians apply to Yale early while sending OUAC, Quebec or western provincial applications on their normal schedule. Read Yale's restrictions before you submit, and keep your Canadian deadlines on the same calendar so nothing slips.

Tips for Canadian applicants

Your Canadian transcript is read as issued. Use the activities and essay sections to show depth in a few commitments rather than a long list. If you plan to describe a provincial award or exam the reader may not know, explain it briefly in plain words.
