In short
- Stanford is a private research university in Stanford, California, on the San Francisco Peninsula.
- It accepts only the Common Application. Restrictive Early Action is due November 1; Regular Decision is due January 5.
- An ACT or SAT score is a required part of the first-year application.
- Admission is need-aware for international citizens, but Stanford says it meets the full need of every admitted student.
Overview
Stanford sits between San Francisco and San Jose, next to Palo Alto. Undergraduates are admitted to the university rather than to a specific school, and the academic year runs on quarters, so students take more, shorter courses than in a semester calendar. For a student coming from a Canadian semester system, that faster rhythm is one of the first things to adjust to.
How to apply for 2026-27
Stanford uses the Common Application only. The calendar has two versions of each round, depending on whether you send an optional arts portfolio.
| Round | Standard deadline | With arts portfolio |
|---|---|---|
| Restrictive Early Action | November 1 | October 15 (arts materials October 20) |
| Regular Decision | January 5 | December 5 (arts materials December 10) |
Restrictive Early Action is non-binding, but it restricts other early applications. Early decisions arrive by mid-December and regular decisions by early April, with a May 1 reply date for both.
Testing policy
Stanford's first-year page lists ACT or SAT scores among the required application components. Stanford was test-optional for several pandemic-era cycles, so older advice online may be out of date. Check the standardized testing page linked from the first-year page for score-reporting details and timing before you register for a sitting.
Financial aid for international students
Stanford separates applicants by citizenship. US citizens, permanent residents, undocumented and DACA students and eligible noncitizens are reviewed need-blind, including those who live abroad. For international citizens, including Canadians, a request for aid is a factor in the admission decision, which Stanford says makes the process more selective.
Once a student is admitted, Stanford says it meets the full need of all admitted students regardless of citizenship. There are no merit scholarships apart from a limited number of athletic awards. If you will need aid, you must say so when you apply; the international applicant page explains the timing.
Notes for Canadian applicants
Stanford's international page does not mention Canada specifically. You submit your provincial transcript as issued, along with counsellor and teacher recommendations through the Common App. Short-answer questions and essays carry real weight, so give yourself time to draft.
The United States guide on StudyBrix covers the pieces a Canadian school counsellor may not know well, such as the school report and midyear report. For entry documents, see the official US student visa page.
A workable timeline
Stanford's October 15 arts deadline is the earliest date in this guide for most students, so decide in early September whether a portfolio is worth sending. Without one, aim to have essays drafted by mid-October so your counsellor and teachers have two weeks to submit their parts before November 1.
- Late August: create a Common App account and list Stanford.
- September: book your last SAT or ACT sitting and ask two teachers for recommendations.
- October: finish short answers and essays; confirm your school report is on its way.
- Mid-December: early decision released. If deferred, send a brief update through the portal.
Study habits for a quarter system
Ten-week terms leave little time to recover from a slow start. Building a weekly review habit before you arrive helps more than cramming. Our study skills deck for university and the post on what changes in first-year university are practical places to begin.
