In short
- Georgia Tech is a public research university in midtown Atlanta, focused on engineering, computing, science and design.
- It uses the Common App exclusively. Non-Georgia and international applicants use Early Action 2 (November 2) or Regular Decision (January 6).
- All first-year applicants must submit at least one SAT or ACT result.
- International applicants must meet University System of Georgia English proficiency rules.
Overview
Georgia Tech is part of the University System of Georgia and sits in midtown Atlanta. It is strongly oriented toward engineering and computing, with colleges of sciences, design, business and liberal arts as well. A long-standing feature is its cooperative education and internship program, which lets students alternate study terms with paid work terms. Canadian students familiar with co-op at Waterloo or other schools will recognise the model, though the details and work authorization rules differ for international students in the US.
How to apply for 2026-27
Georgia Tech states that it exclusively uses the Common Application for first-year admission. Its early action rounds are split by residency:
| Plan | Deadline | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Early Action 1 | October 15 | Georgia students and residents |
| Early Action 2 | November 2 | Non-Georgia students, including international |
| Regular Decision | January 6 | Everyone |
A Canadian applicant should aim for Early Action 2 or Regular Decision. Early action at Georgia Tech is non-binding.
Testing and English proficiency
Georgia Tech's testing page says all first-year applicants must submit results from at least one SAT or ACT to be considered. As a public university in Georgia, it also follows University System of Georgia rules: all international applicants must demonstrate English proficiency through an approved method.
Georgia Tech welcomes extra materials such as a Duolingo English Test result or an unscripted InitialView or Vericant interview, but these do not satisfy the proficiency requirement on their own. They are read as part of holistic review and are due by the document deadline for your plan.
Costs and aid
As a state institution, Georgia Tech charges non-residents more than Georgia residents. International students should budget for the full non-resident cost of attendance and check the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid for any awards open to them. We could not confirm current international aid wording for this update.
Documents and timing for Canadians
Georgia Tech sets a document deadline after each application deadline, and that is when supplementary materials, transcripts and English proficiency evidence must be in. Ask your school in October to send transcripts for an Early Action 2 application. Georgia Tech's international first-year page lists transcript requirements for different school systems, which matters if you attend a school that issues provincial transcripts separately from school reports.
- September: confirm how you will meet the English proficiency rule.
- October: take your final SAT or ACT and ask your school to send transcripts.
- November 2: submit for Early Action 2, then meet the document deadline.
