Overview

The University of Manitoba was founded in 1877. It is a public research university with two main Winnipeg campuses: Fort Garry, a large campus in the south of the city, and Bannatyne, the downtown health sciences campus next to the Health Sciences Centre. Fort Garry is also home to four colleges, and the university runs research farms south of Winnipeg, the William Norrie Centre for inner-city social work education and a Northern Social Work Program in Thompson.

Some programs at UM are not entered straight from high school. Students start in a direct-entry faculty, complete set courses and then apply to the later-entry program, as with several professional health programs.

How to apply

You apply directly online through UM's admissions site. UM's undergraduate admissions page says that to start classes in September you must apply by March 1, and winter and summer starts are also available; program requirements differ, so confirm the 2027 details on the undergraduate admissions page.

Students from US high schools, IB programs and other provinces have their own requirement pages. Our article on IB and AP at Canadian universities explains how those credits are often treated.

How grades are considered

Admission to direct-entry programs is based mainly on your required Grade 12 courses, and offers before graduation are conditional on your final marks; each program lists its own required courses. For programs you enter after first year, your university grade point average matters most. UM uses a 4.5-point scale, on which an A+ is worth 4.5, which our Canadian GPA scales explained article puts next to other provinces.

UM lists co-op or internship options in agriculture and food sciences, architecture, arts, engineering, environment and earth sciences, science (including computer science) and the Asper School of Business; check the program page.

Choosing your first-year route

Because many UM programs are entered after a year or more of study, the faculty you start in matters. Pick a first-year faculty whose courses also count toward the program you hope to reach, so a year of study is not wasted if plans change. If your plans are still open, choose the faculty with the widest set of courses you would enjoy, so you can switch direction without starting over.

Costs and funding

Tuition depends on the faculty and your domestic or international status. UM posts current rates on its official undergraduate tuition and fees page, and scholarships and bursaries on its financial aid and awards site. For study permits, start at the Government of Canada page on studying in Canada.
