Overview: five campuses
The University of Alberta is a public research university based in Edmonton; its first classes began in September 1908. It describes five campuses: North Campus, Campus Saint-Jean, South Campus and Enterprise Square (downtown) in Edmonton, and Augustana Campus in Camrose. It also has a presence in Calgary through satellite sites.
Campus Saint-Jean is the university's French-language campus, which can suit graduates of francophone or French immersion schools.
How to apply and the 2027 dates
Alberta has no shared provincial application for this university: you apply directly through the University of Alberta application, which opens October 1, 2026 for fall 2027. The university advises starting on October 1 of your Grade 12 year. High school applicants can list two programs: the first choice is evaluated first and the second only if you are not eligible for the first. The application fee is not refundable.
The official dates and deadlines page lists, for fall 2027 high school applicants:
- March 1, 2027: application deadline for most programs.
- April 30, 2027: self-report final high school marks.
- August 1, 2027: outstanding documents. Alberta transcripts are collected automatically and usually arrive in early August.
How grades are considered
The University of Alberta advises applying from October 1 of your Grade 12 year, using your final Grade 11 marks and any Grade 12 marks you already have, and you report your Grade 11 and 12 courses in the application. Each program has its own required courses and competitive average, published on the program page. Students outside Alberta are assessed on the equivalent courses in their own system.
Some programs add requirements, and Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Dentistry, Medicine and Law have separate deadlines. If you are applying from the US or an IB or AP school, our article on IB and AP at Canadian universities explains how those courses are often treated.
Costs and funding
Tuition depends on the program and on whether you are a domestic or international student. Current first-year estimates are on the university's official tuition and fees page, with a separate page for international tuition. International students also need a study permit; begin at the Government of Canada page on studying in Canada.
