In short

  • Heidelberg University was founded in 1386 and describes itself as Germany’s oldest university. It is a public university of the state of Baden-Württemberg.
  • Bachelor programs are taught in German, so plan for a recognized German certificate.
  • Heidelberg University is not on the uni-assist list; international applicants apply to the university itself.
  • Under Baden-Württemberg law, non-EU students with a foreign school certificate pay 1,500 euros per semester in tuition.

The university and the town

Heidelberg University was founded in 1386 and is a public institution of Baden-Württemberg. Teaching takes place on three campus areas: the Old Town (Altstadt) along the Neckar, Bergheim, and the Neuenheimer Feld campus across the river, home to the natural sciences, medicine and the university hospital. Check which campus your program uses before you look for a room.

The university is comprehensive. Popular options for international students include the sciences, the humanities, and programs tied to its institutes for area studies. Medicine is also offered, but it is a nationally restricted subject with its own rules and very few places; applicants from outside the EU and EEA with a foreign certificate apply to Heidelberg directly between 1 June and 15 July.

Language of instruction

Undergraduate programs at Heidelberg are taught in German. Some master programs and doctoral work use English, but a Canadian or American student who wants a bachelor degree here needs German at the level the program sets, typically shown through DSH or TestDaF results. This is the single biggest planning step, and it is worth starting in grade 10 or 11 if Heidelberg is a serious goal.

Entry requirements for North American graduates

Germany applies national rules for recognizing foreign school certificates. The DAAD guide for US high school and IB graduates (June 2025) explains that a US diploma needs defined academic units, an unweighted GPA of at least 3.0, and AP exams scoring 3 or higher in a subject pattern that depends on your intended field. General admission to all subjects requires five APs; programs in sciences or humanities need four in a specified mix. Students who do not meet these rules can attend a Studienkolleg and sit the assessment exam, or complete two years of college first.

Canadian certificates are evaluated by province. The IB Diploma is recognized when subject and level conditions are met. Heidelberg checks this during its own admission review, so ask the university if you are unsure.

How and when to apply

Heidelberg University does not appear on the uni-assist list of participating universities, so you apply through the university online application, following the instructions for international applicants. Deadlines depend on whether a program has restricted admission. On the Heidelberg deadlines page, programs with restricted admission or an entrance exam take applications for the winter semester from 1 June to 15 July, and unrestricted programs from 1 June to 31 October. Deadlines that fall on a weekend are not extended, and admission regulations may set other dates, so confirm them for 2027/28.

  1. Choose a program and confirm its language and admission rules.
  2. Check that your diploma, APs or IB meet the recognition rules.
  3. Gather certified copies, translations if needed, and your German certificate.
  4. Submit the online application and track messages from the admissions office.

Tuition and fees

Baden-Württemberg charges tuition to international students from outside the EU and EEA who hold a foreign school-leaving qualification. Heidelberg University states the fee as 1,500 euros per semester for bachelor, state examination and consecutive master programs, under the state Higher Education Fees Act. A small number of exemptions exist, and applications for exemption are due 15 July for the winter semester. All students also pay the semester contribution.

You will need a German student visa and proof of funds. Check the German mission in your country for the current rules.

Preparation tips

German lecture courses often have a single final exam, so build steady review habits. Our study skills deck is a good start, and the German A2 deck helps with everyday vocabulary early on. The Germany guide compares Heidelberg with other German universities.
