Overview
The University of Vienna was founded in 1365 and is a large public university. Its main building is on the Ringstrasse, and faculties are spread through the city, including the Campus in the former general hospital grounds in the 9th district and the Biology Centre. It is a comprehensive university without engineering or medicine, which are taught at separate Vienna institutions.
Language requirements
Almost all bachelor programs are taught in German. The university asks for proof of German at A2 or higher when you apply and at C1 to be admitted. The bachelor program taught in English, Mathematical Foundations of Data Science, needs no German proof; check its page for the English proof required. For programs with an entrance exam, you can take part without C1 but must show it at enrolment.
If you apply with A2 German, you can reach C1 through the German course in the University Preparation Programme of the Vienna Universities (VWU), but you cannot start the degree itself until the language condition is met.
Entry requirements for US and Canadian diplomas
The University of Vienna publishes country-specific requirements. For a US high school diploma, it asks applicants who have SAT, ACT or AP results to upload them together with the diploma as a single PDF. Canada is not listed separately, so Canadian applicants should check the general rules and the program page, or contact the admissions office. A completed bachelor degree of at least three years (180 ECTS) can replace the school certificate as your entrance qualification.
Some programs, such as psychology, business and several sciences, have entrance exams or aptitude procedures. The program profile states whether one applies.

Fees
Austrian public universities charge tuition differently for EU and non-EU students, and all students pay the Austrian Students’ Union fee each semester. Students from outside the EU and EEA generally pay a tuition fee per semester; the University of Vienna lists the current amount and any exemptions on its tuition fee pages. A residence permit for students is required for Canadian and US citizens staying longer than six months.
Preparing with StudyBrix
Start German early with our German A1 and German A2 decks, enough to meet the application threshold. For the data science bachelor, the linear algebra deck and Python course are a good base. See the Austria guide for the national system.
