An original passage with comprehension, reasoning and a marking guide.
The museum label
A museum displayed a worn wooden tool with a label reading, “Probably used for preparing fibre.” Beside it were drawings of similar tools and a note explaining that no written description of this particular object survived. Sam first thought the word “probably” made the label weak. After reading the note, Sam changed their mind.
Read, think and respond
- What material was the tool made from?
- Why is the word probably appropriate here?
- What new evidence might strengthen the interpretation?
