Two garden diaries

Two volunteers keep diaries about the same community garden. One describes crowded paths and frequent disagreements over watering. The other records shared tools, new friendships and a successful harvest. Neither diary is necessarily false. Each writer may have noticed different events or considered different experiences important. A historian would compare dates, purposes and additional records before describing the whole garden community.

Try it yourself

  1. Why can the diaries differ without either being wholly false?

  2. Name two checks suggested for comparing them.

  3. What would be an overgeneralization from the first diary alone?

  4. Explain how the passage illustrates historical perspective.
