Sound starts with vibration · Revision sheet
Connect observable vibration with sound without confusing loudness and pitch.
Learn the idea
Vibration
A vibrating object moves back and forth. Many everyday sound sources vibrate.
Travel
Sound transfers through matter such as air. It is not a stream of tiny pieces of the source.
Loudness and pitch
Louder and higher-pitched describe different features. A sound can be quiet and high-pitched.
Protect hearing
Do not place ears close to loud sources or use loud sound as a classroom test. Gentle observations are sufficient.
Explain without looking
- Does hearing a bell mean small pieces of metal travel into your ear?
- Which observation supports the idea that a ruler can vibrate?
