Constitutional isomers and stereoisomers · Revision sheet
Tell changed connectivity from changed spatial arrangement.
Learn the idea
Constitutional
Constitutional isomers have the same molecular formula but different connectivity.
Stereo
Stereoisomers have the same connectivity but differ in spatial arrangement.
Conformations
Rotations around ordinary single bonds may give conformations rather than new constitutional compounds.
Evidence
A flat formula can omit needed three-dimensional information.
Explain without looking
- Ordinary rotation about a C–C single bond most directly changes what?
- Give a check to avoid counting duplicate drawings as separate isomers.
