The bell by the shelf
An original passage with comprehension questions and a teacher key.
The bell by the shelf
The class library had a small bell on its return shelf. A sign said to ring it when a returned book needed repair. One morning, Jo found a book with a loose page. Jo placed it beside the bell and rang once. The helper came with a repair envelope. Later, another pupil returned an undamaged book and reached for the bell. Jo pointed to the sign, and the pupil placed the book quietly in the ordinary return tray.
