Gas pressure at fixed temperature
For a fixed amount of ideal gas at constant temperature, pressure increases as volume decreases.
Rule and assumptions
For a fixed amount of ideal gas at constant temperature, pressure increases as volume decreases.
P₂ = P₁V₁/V₂
Worked examples
An ideal gas has initial pressure 64 kPa and volume 3.7 L. At fixed amount and temperature its volume becomes 1.6 L. Find the new pressure. Round to 3 decimal places if needed. Answer in kPa.
P₂ = P₁V₁/V₂ 64 × 3.7/1.6 = 148
148 kPa
An ideal gas has initial pressure 146 kPa and volume 6.7 L. At fixed amount and temperature its volume becomes 5.5 L. Find the new pressure. Round to 3 decimal places if needed. Answer in kPa.
P₂ = P₁V₁/V₂ 146 × 6.7/5.5 = 177.855
177.855 kPa
Try two questions
An ideal gas has initial pressure 87 kPa and volume 4.9 L. At fixed amount and temperature its volume becomes 6.3 L. Find the new pressure. Round to 3 decimal places if needed. Answer in kPa.
An ideal gas has initial pressure 58 kPa and volume 6.3 L. At fixed amount and temperature its volume becomes 4.6 L. Find the new pressure. Round to 3 decimal places if needed. Answer in kPa.
Answers and reasoning
Answers and marking notes
- 67.667 kPa
P₂ = P₁V₁/V₂ 87 × 4.9/6.3 = 67.667
- 79.435 kPa
P₂ = P₁V₁/V₂ 58 × 6.3/4.6 = 79.435
