Units: conversion and dimension checks
Use scale factors correctly for lengths, areas and volumes.
Understand the idea
Length
Length uses a single conversion factor.
1 m = 100 cm; 1 km = 1000 m
2.4 m = 240 cm.
Area
Square the length conversion factor.
1 m² = 10,000 cm²
0.3 m² = 3000 cm².
Volume
Cube the length conversion factor.
1 m³ = 1,000,000 cm³
0.002 m³ = 2000 cm³.
Capacity
Match capacity and volume units before calculating.
1 L = 1000 mL; 1 mL = 1 cm³
0.75 L = 750 mL.
Speed
Convert both distance and time.
1 m/s = 3.6 km/h
5 m/s = 18 km/h.
Check the answer
A correct number with the wrong kind of unit is not a complete answer.
area has squared units; volume has cubed units
Rectangle 3 m by 4 m: area 12 m², perimeter 14 m.
