Solution dilution
Solute amount is conserved; V₂ is final solution volume, not added solvent volume.
The key idea
Solute amount is conserved; V₂ is final solution volume, not added solvent volume.
C₁V₁ = C₂V₂
Worked examples
Dilute 130 mL of a 2 mol/L solution to 0.4 mol/L without losing solute. Find the final volume in mL.
2 × 130 ÷ 0.4 = 650
650 mL
Dilute 220 mL of a 2 mol/L solution to 0.4 mol/L without losing solute. Find the final volume in mL.
2 × 220 ÷ 0.4 = 1100
1100 mL
Try it yourself
Dilute 40 mL of a 1 mol/L solution to 0.2 mol/L without losing solute. Find the final volume in mL.
Dilute 280 mL of a 3.5 mol/L solution to 0.7 mol/L without losing solute. Find the final volume in mL.
