Historical sources and their context · Revision sheet
Ask who made a source, when and for what audience.
Learn the idea
Source
A source is evidence to interpret, not an automatically complete account.
Context
Creator, date, audience and purpose influence what is recorded.
Corroboration
Compare independent sources instead of merely counting repeated copies.
Limits
A missing detail does not always prove that an event never happened.
Explain without looking
- Which is a historical question rather than a personal attack?
- Why is silence in a surviving record not always proof of absence?
