Earth, seasons and observation geometry · Revision sheet
Distinguish rotation, orbit and axial tilt.
Learn the idea
Rotation
Earth rotates, producing the ordinary day–night cycle.
Orbit
Earth also travels around the Sun over a year.
Seasons
Axial tilt changes solar angle and daylight duration through the year.
Hemispheres
The two hemispheres have opposite seasonal patterns; local climate also depends on other factors.
Explain without looking
- Why should a solar-angle diagram state the location and time of year?
- Should a model use a light beam as a safe instruction to look directly at the Sun?
