Conduction, convection and radiation · Revision sheet
Identify transfer mechanisms and explain insulation as slowing transfer.
Learn the idea
Conduction
Energy can transfer through interacting particles without bulk transport of material.
Convection
A fluid's bulk motion can carry energy. Convection is not the mechanism for heat crossing a vacuum.
Radiation
Electromagnetic radiation can transfer energy across a vacuum.
Insulation
Insulation reduces energy-transfer rates; it does not create energy or guarantee no transfer forever.
Explain without looking
- How would you test an insulation comparison fairly using supplied safe data?
- Which observation alone does not identify the transfer mechanism?
