Periodic patterns and their limits · Revision sheet
Use atomic structure to explain trends rather than treating all patterns as absolute.
Learn the idea
Period
A row is a period; a column is a group.
Main groups
Similar valence-electron patterns often produce related chemical behavior.
Trends
Across a typical period, atomic radius tends to decrease while first ionization energy tends to increase, with exceptions.
Model limits
Comparisons depend on the quantity and species; an atom and its ion need not have the same size.
Explain without looking
- Why is chemical similarity not proof that two elements are identical?
- An atom gains one electron while retaining 9 protons. How many electrons does the resulting ion have if the atom was neutral?
