Enzymes, active sites and rate evidence · Revision sheet
Describe catalysis without assigning intentions to molecules.
Learn the idea
Enzyme
An enzyme is a biological catalyst, usually a protein, that lowers the activation barrier.
Active site
Substrate interactions depend on shape and chemical environment, not just a rigid geometric lock.
Conditions
Temperature and pH can change activity and structure; optimum conditions differ among enzymes.
Energy
Catalysis does not change the overall equilibrium constant or make an unfavorable reaction favorable by itself.
Explain without looking
- At fixed temperature, does an enzyme make equilibrium permanently favor more product?
- Why is saying an enzyme wants the reaction to happen scientifically weak?
