Carbon frameworks and structural formulas · Revision sheet
Read connectivity rather than only counting letters in a molecular formula.
Learn the idea
Carbon
In typical neutral school organic structures, carbon forms four bonds when bond orders are counted.
Formulas
A molecular formula counts atoms; a structural formula also indicates connectivity.
Unsaturation
A double bond counts as two bonds and a triple bond as three in this valence model.
Boundaries
Not all carbon compounds are classified as organic; carbon dioxide and carbonates are standard inorganic examples.
Explain without looking
- In CH₃–CH₃, how many bonds does each carbon have when all C–H bonds are included?
- Explain why a double bond is not simply two extra atoms.
