Ecological sampling and population estimates · Revision sheet
Make estimates with assumptions and report their limits.
Learn the idea
Sampling
A sample is used to infer properties of a larger population or area.
Placement
Random or systematic designs can reduce some selection biases when applied appropriately.
Estimate
For a simple quadrat model, mean count per area can be scaled to a stated comparable area.
Uncertainty
Distribution, detectability, season and sample size affect confidence in an estimate.
Explain without looking
- Why should season be recorded in a field survey?
- Which report is more informative?
