Place value and regrouping
Explain what a digit represents, not just which digit is largest.
Learn the idea
Position matters
In base ten, the value of a digit depends on its position. In 462, the 6 represents 60.
Regrouping
Ten ones can be exchanged for one ten without changing the total.
Zero
A zero can hold a place. In 507 there are no tens, but there are five hundreds.
Check
Read the full number, expand it, and compare the largest place where two numbers differ.
